Snow removal costs, building permit top Melvin council session

03/09/2010
Snow removal costs have caused budget concerns for area cities and Melvin is no exception. Mayor Gary Benz told the Melvin city council at its meeting Monday night that the current budget for snow removal was set at $5,000. Benz said the actual cost thus far has been about twice that amount.

Benz said, however, that he did not see a major problem, since some departments are under budget, and the amount left over should cover the deficit for snow removal. He also stated that the city should receive about $12,000 in real estate taxes later this month.
The new 2010-2011 budget was passed by the council, and will be sent to the county recorder, who will file it with the state.
The mayor also informed council members that Melvin should find out later this month if the funding for the proposed new sewer system for the town has been found. He said he was notified by Kelly Grapler, who is heading up the project for the city, that one of the two property owners that she was dealing with to buy land for the holding ponds, has definitely turned down the offer. There is another proposal for land that has not yet been answered by the land owner. Benz said that the city could be bonded for up to $150,000, and could borrow more, if needed. Grapler will be at the next city council meeting on April 5th.
The council approved a building permit for Allen Mastbergen to replace a building where the roof had collapsed from too much snow. The building is the old Jordan building just north of Main Street which has been declared a total loss.
The council also approved a liquor license for JR's. The license does not include outdoor sales, but does include Sunday sales.
