OCH hosts Heart Health Bazaar

03/09/2010
Janie VandeGriend, RN
Dr. William Hicks and Janie VandeGriend, RN, were the keynote speakers at Osceola Community Hospital's Heart Health Bazaar February 24 in the Wellness Center multi-purpose room. Hicks reviewed cardiac risk factors and BMI-body mass index. He stated education is key for good heart health.

Weight control, exercise and no smoking are important. The medical doctor stated that the medical community is getting more aggressive in treating hypertension which increases risks of heart attacks and strokes.
VandeGriend echoed the fact that diabetes and heart disease are connected. Diabetes has become "more rampant" with 90-95% diagnosed with Type 2 of the disease. Approximately 5-10% are diagnosed as Type 1 which is insulin dependent. VandeGriend stated that being overweight, lack of exercise and poor eating habits contribute to diabetes.
Complications from diabetes includes cardiovascular disease which doubles in men and triples for women. Additionally, diabetes patients could suffer eye and kidney problems as well as numbness and tingling in body parts.
Approximately 60 people attended the speakers' session with many staying for a "heart healthy" meal. Ten vendors showed their wares at the bazaar held in the hallways at OCH: Jessica Mydland, Tastefully Simple; Meggan Block, Uppercase Living; Lindsey Helmers, Cookie Lee Jewelry; Jodi Wagenaar, Pampered Chef; Jodi DeWeerdt, Signatures Homestyles; Kathy Winter, Creative Memories; Michelle Freeman, Mary Kay; Kari Wasmund, Gold Canyon Candles; Lisa Feldkamp, Lisa's Lattes; Megan Loerts, Getting' Purse-n'-all.
