S-O's Matt Jurgens earns INA all-state grid honors

Senior Matt Jurgens is one of several northwest Iowa football players to receive all-state recognition from the Iowa Newspaper Association. Committees of sportswriters from around the state met in Des Moines Sunday to select honor squads from each of the six classes of competition.


      Jurgens, a senior linebacker for Sibley-Ocheyedan, register-ed 130 tackles during the nine-game regular season. He was named to the third defensive unit in Class 2A.
      Area players named to the first offensive unit in Class 2A include Chris Campbell, junior wide receiver, Cherokee; Casey Peters, senior lineman, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock; Nate DeJong, junior quarterback, CL/G-LR; and Brett Tomkins, senior running back, Esther-ville-Lincoln Central.
      Northwest Iowans on the first defensive unit include, Josh Fog, senior lineman, Emmetsburg; Preston Perrett, senior lineman, CL/G-LR; Spencer Schlicht, junior lineman, E-LC; Jarren Wiersma, senior linebacker, CL/G-LR; Eric Van Ginkel, senior defensive back, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley; and Andrew Dawson, senior kicker, Cherokee.
      Area players on the second offensive unit include Reid Geerdes, senior tight end, CL-G-LR; Mason Sander, senior lineman, E-LC: and Tyler Jones, sophomore quarterback, Cherokee.
      Emmetsburg's junior kicker Jake Vaughan was named to the second defensive unit.
      Sioux Center's senior wide out, Jason Roskam, was a third team offensive pick as was Ben George, a senior lineman from Cherokee.
      Players named to the third defensive unit included Jesse Wolfe, junior lineman, Emmetsburg; Matt Jurgens, senior linebacker, S-O; and Tony Brugman, senior defensive back, Emmetsburg.
Class 1A, 3A selections
      West Lyon's senior defensive back, Caleb Blauwet was the only northwest Iowan to make the first team in Class 1A.
      Players named to the second offensive unit included Trevor Tiefenthaler, sophomore wide receiver, Sioux Central; Raymond Schiefen, senior offensive lineman, West Sioux; and Jordan TeGrootenhuis, senior lineman, West Lyon.
      Sioux Central's senior running back Justin Shideler, was named to the third offensive unit.
      Players on the third defensive unit included Seth Moser, senior lineman, West Lyon, and Chris Zimbelman, senior linebacker, West Sioux.
      In Class 3A, Paul Lundgren, a senior lineman was named to the second defensive unit while Spencer senior Joey Toole was a third team pick at defensive back.
      Senior captains were also selected for each class. They included: eight-man, Craig Pruismann, running back, Northeast Hamilton; Class A, Zack Bandow, quarterback IKM; Class 1A, Caleb Walter, quarterback, West Branch; Class 2A, Reece Jedlicka, running back, Solon; Class 3A, Tyler Nielsen, linebacker, Humboldt; and Class 4A, Nate Snead, quarterback, Southeast Polk.
